A while ago, I wrote a little oneshot out of boredom. This oneshot is about a little girl who's alone on a snowy night. As she sits on the ground, she begins to contemplate the meaning of love and if anyone loves her. As she begins to doubt it, a young boy comes and gives her that little bit of hope that she needs.
Someone to Love.
Snow was falling from the sky onto the ground. The soft crunching of feet could be heard as people walked by, ignorant to the huddled form of a young girl. She couldn’t have been any older than ten by the looks of it. Her long black hair blended in with the darkened wall, her skin a pale white color. Cerulean orbs darted back and forth as she observed the people walking in front of her.
Businessmen walked by with their briefcases. Some of them had toys to give to their children. Others had necklaces or gifts to give to their patient wives at home.
Friends huddled together trying to stay warm, as they ran past, their laughter rang throughout the streets.
Families walked by, smiles on their faces, in groups or one by one.
Lovers walked by hand in hand observing the winter wonderland surrounding them, whispering sweet nothings into each other’s ears. Soft giggles were heard from one girl as her lover softly breathed on her neck.
It sickened her. All of these people were different, but they all had something in common: Love. Someone loved them. Someone cared for them. Someone would miss them. Someone…would die for them.
She was told once that everyone has someone who loves them, so where was her person? Did they abandon her? Did they disappear? Did they miss her? Did they – she gulped – still love her? These thoughts ran rapidly through her head as she hugged her knees tighter. She showed her eyes downward, no longer interested in the passing people.
Then a blue-gloved hand waved in front of her face. She looked up to see who it was. Her eyes automatically met a pair of dark green eyes and a messy stack of brown hair. She darted her eyes away, embarrassed at being so close to another person.
“Hi, are you alone?” It was a boy she concluded, by the sound of the voice.
She nodded her response and he took a seat next to her.
“So,” he hesitated for a bit, “What’s your name?”
Her eyes widened in shock. She looked at him not saying a word.
“You don’t have one?” he asked a bit taken back.
She nodded. She already knew what he was going to do; he was going to laugh at her, just like all the others.
“Ah, I see,” he said. He rested his head on a fist as if deep in thought.
A bit taken back, she looked downward again, watching as each snowflake disappeared into the snow covered ground.
“Then can I name you?” he asked.
Her eyes widened a bit, not knowing what to do next. It was if time stopped for a bit.
“Is that a no?”
She snapped out of her trance and furiously shook her head.
“Ok. What shall I name you then?” he once again went deep into thought. It was a while until either spoke again, “How about Yukiko? Like the snow?”
“That’s fine,” she whispered softly. She hid her face in her sleeves, embarrassed.
“Ok then, Yukiko, do you want to come with me somewhere? I promise it’s better than sitting around here.”
She nodded.
He stood up and brushed some of the snow off of the back of his pants. After successfully getting the snow off, he outreached a hand for her to grab. She stared blankly at it not sure if she should grab a hold of it or if she should just get up herself.
“Come on, grab my hand,” he smiled reassuringly at her.
Yukiko blushed slightly and took his hand. He pulled her to her feet and helped her brush some of the snow off of her sleeves while she brushed the rest of herself. After she was cleared off he slipped his hand into hers and slowly led her into the stream of people.
Maybe, she thought, maybe he would be the one who will care for her. Just maybe.
